Radiation dosage in flight through the Van Allen belt.

چکیده
A B O U T ten years ago, when avialion medicine developed a seri, ous interest in the problem of cosmic ray ,hazards in flight at the top of and outside the atmosphere, it became common practice to express cosmic ray intensities in terms of tissue ionization dosages, that is, in roentgens equivalent physical ( rep) . This expedited ~he interpretation of the ~;lata of the physicists inasmuch as exposures quoted in rep or milli-rep immediately convey, to the radiobiologist, an idea about the effects on living matter to be expected. On the other hand, one should realize that dosages derived in this manner are not representative of the true exposure that would prevail if a ~human ,body were to replace the measuring device. Though cosmic ray intensities are often given in units of ion pairs per c.c. of standard air, thereby lending themselves easily to the indicated conversion, they usually have been measured with equipment which does not fulfill the requirements

Radiation Hazards and Manned Space Flight.
T HE POTENTIAL medical hazards of man's venture into space will span a number of disciplines in regard to the pathology and deranged physiology to which the human body may be subject in travel beyond the earth's atmosphere. Not the least hazard is that having to do with the effects of radiation to be encountered in free space. This problem is one which is receiving considerable attention from a...
متن کاملThe Chandra X-Ray Observatory’s Radiation Environment and the AP-8/AE-8 Model
The Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) was launched on July 23, 1999 and reached its final orbit on August 7, 1999. The CXO is in a highly elliptical orbit, approximately 140,000 km x 10,000 km, and has a period of approximately 63.5 hours (≈ 2.65 days). It transits the Earth’s Van Allen belts once per orbit during which no science observations can be performed due to the high radiation environmen...
متن کاملVulnerability of Manned Orbital Command Posts to Natural Space Radiations
The shielding requirements for the protection of the crew of a manned orbital command post against the natural space radiations are investigated. Two types of orbits of military importance and of wide applicability are considered—a long-duration, high-altitude orbit above the Van Allen Belt and a short-duration, low-altitude polar orbit below it. Model environments for both orbits in terms of s...
متن کاملPhysical Investigation of Space, Dosimetry of Space Ionizing Ray Effect (Van Allen belts, Galactic Cosmic Rays and Solar particles) and Plotting Dose Map for Satellite Circular Missions
One of the main factors for satellite design is simulating of total ionizing dose due to space ionizing rays in devices used in space. By measurement of induced dose based on available data in different altitudes, expenses of designing, satellite weight and amount of needed fuel will be reduced. Optimum design of satellite for protecting satellite against ionizing radiation has considerable eff...
متن کاملUnraveling the drivers of the storm time radiation belt response
We present a new framework to study the time evolution and dynamics of the outer Van Allen belt electron fluxes. The framework is entirely based on the large-scale solar wind storm drivers and their substructures. The Van Allen Probe observations, revealing the electron flux behavior throughout the outer belt, are combined with continuous, long-term (over 1.5 solar cycles) geosynchronous orbit ...
